Adviser to the former Minister of Supply of Egypt, Nader Nureddin, revealed the details of Egypt’s purchase of tons of Chadian meat in connection with high prices for municipal meat within the country.
Nour El-Din explained in statements to RT that as part of the diversity of red meat origins from which Egypt imports about 60% of its needs, Egypt has chosen to import beef from Chad through its Egyptian livestock farms that it has established in Chad. where an Egyptian farm feeds these calves for 45 years. One day, until the meat acquires a taste that matches the consumption pattern of the Egyptians, and change the original taste, which depends on feeding herbs there in the green pastures.
Nur ad-Din pointed out that Egypt has no comparative advantage in raising calves due to its extremely arid climate, lack of rain and natural pastures on which livestock is raised, and its small livestock wealth depends on green fodder (Egyptian alfalfa), specially grown feed for livestock and irrigated by the waters of the Nile River, making Egypt the world’s largest importer of wheat, where alfalfa is replacing wheat in the winter season and its area is larger than wheat because farmers in the Egyptian countryside prefer to sow for their livestock, rather than growing wheat for themselves because of the daily benefit they get from selling milk, dairy products, butter, and what they produce. Male calves are bred or sold.
In addition, the consumption of one head of cows is about five thousand cubic meters of water, which is incommensurable with the large water shortage in Egypt. Grass growing on the rain until it reaches the required weight above 300 kg in about ten years, and it takes hours to settle, to become fragrant, and therefore it did not suit the taste of the Egyptian consumer.
After that, Egypt decided to move to Chad and on the Egyptian farms there to raise the cows themselves so that they reach the required weight in less time, within three to four years, and cooking does not take much time, after which the cows are slaughtered and sent to Egypt by flights , which last a whole month to transport 600,000 tons of meat at the rate of 50,000 tons per flight until the end of the month of Ramadan, during which the consumption of meat by the Egyptians doubles.
Egypt’s plan to import meat is based on a variety of sources of origin, as it initially relied on frozen meat imports from Ireland until mad cow disease appeared and spread to Brazil. Therefore, it is important for Egypt to have multiple sources of red meat imports, no matter fresh or frozen to ensure movement between these sources in search of the best and to ensure that there is no disruption created without an alternative.
He indicated that Chadian meat would be offered at a very low price, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Supply, at a price not exceeding 145 pounds per kilogram, which is less than half the price of Egyptian municipal meat, which exceeded 300 pounds per kilogram of Egyptian consumption and does not require a long time to settle into Egyptian cuisine, as the Egyptian government is counting on the success of the experience of importing meat from Chad due to the fact that it is Egyptian selection.
