Algeria Withdraws from Hosting Africa Cup of Nations Finals

Introduction

Algerian Football Federation President Walid Sadi has announced that his country has officially withdrawn from the race to host the Africa Cup of Nations finals, with two editions scheduled for 2025 and 2027.

Withdrawal from Hosting Bid

The Algerian federation was battling with its Moroccan counterpart, in addition to another joint bid by Nigeria and Benin to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025, while it was battling to host the next edition with Senegal, Botswana, and a trilateral bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025 Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Algerian television reported on Tuesday that the Football Association had decided to withdraw from the competition to host the two editions in light of reports confirming that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had decided to entrust its organization to Morocco and Senegal respectively.

Algerian television, through its social media account “X” (formerly Twitter), quoted Walid Sadi, the new president of the Football Association, as saying: “Algeria officially withdraws its candidacy to host the 2025 and 2027 African Cups. Nations.”

The announcement comes a day ahead of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Office meeting where the two winning bids to host the aforementioned two African Cup of Nations will be formally announced.

Algeria was hoping to host the tournament for the second time in its history after the 1990 tournament was held on its soil and won for the first time in its history before adding a second title in Egypt’s 2019 tournament.

Walid Sadi officially assumed his duties as President of the Algerian Football Federation, replacing former President Djahid Zwezif, and the handover ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Algerian Football Federation in Dali Ibrahim in the capital.
