The Sudan Tribune reported that a Sudanese farmer was killed on Wednesday by Ethiopian militants in an attack on the border in the country’s east.

The newspaper cites sources, which it called “reliable”, that Ethiopian fighters penetrated 10 kilometers deep into Sudanese territory in the Atreb border region of the village of Basanda in the state of Gedaref.

The newspaper indicated that the prosecutor’s office handed over the body of the deceased to his family.

Border issues represent an acute crisis between Sudan and Ethiopia.

Last October, Addis Ababa announced that the intelligence service had reached an agreement with its Sudanese counterpart to strengthen security and border cooperation during a visit by a Sudanese delegation led by Sudanese Intelligence Service Director-General Ahmed Mufaddal.

Ethiopian Intelligence Service Director General Temesgen Troneh said the two agencies will work together to reduce the impact of cross-border crime, illegal money and human trafficking through capacity building and information sharing.
