Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz Aims to Remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy
Republican Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida plans to file a motion to force House Speaker Kevin McCarthy out of his position this week.
In an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Gaetz stated that if McCarthy remains speaker of the House, he will essentially be serving the Democrats.
Gaetz’s declaration follows the passage of a 45-day stopgap spending bill, which received 335 votes in favor (209 from Democrats and 126 from Republicans). The bill was passed just before the deadline to avoid a government shutdown.
Due to his struggle in rallying enough support from fellow Republicans, McCarthy had to negotiate with Democrats to secure the deal. This decision has already led to political backlash from House Republicans like Gaetz, who had threatened to remove McCarthy as speaker if he collaborated with Democrats to reach an agreement.
Gaetz requires 218 votes for the motion to remove McCarthy to succeed.
“I have enough House Republicans to ensure that McCarthy no longer holds power. By the end of the week, he will either not be speaker or he will be a speaker serving at the pleasure of Democrats,” Gaetz confidently stated.
Nevertheless, McCarthy may not find support among Democrats either.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced that she would “absolutely” vote to remove McCarthy.
“I believe Kevin McCarthy is a weak speaker. It is evident that he has lost control of his caucus. He has brought the country and millions of Americans to the brink by waiting until the last minute to keep the government open, and even then, he only offered a 45-day extension, meaning we’ll face the same situation in November,” Ocasio-Cortez expressed on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
She further emphasized that if McCarthy wanted Democratic support to secure his position, he would have to make a deal: “Unless Kevin McCarthy requests a vote, we won’t give anything away for free.”
